Learn How to Remove Voicemail Notifications From Your Phone

Understanding Voicemail Notifications and Why You Might Want to Disable Them

Voicemail notifications are alerts that appear on your phone whenever someone leaves you a voice message. These notifications can come in several forms: visual indicators on your lock screen, banner messages that pop up at the top of your display, sound alerts, or vibrations. The purpose of these notifications is to let you know that someone has left you a message so you don't miss important communications.

However, many people find voicemail notifications disruptive or annoying. If you receive frequent spam voicemails, you might want to turn off these alerts to reduce phone interruptions. Some users prefer to check their messages on their own schedule rather than being interrupted by constant notifications. Others may find that notifications interfere with work meetings, sleep, or times when they want to focus without distractions.

According to a 2023 survey about smartphone usage, approximately 61% of mobile phone users report feeling overwhelmed by notifications. This includes voicemail alerts, text message notifications, app alerts, and other constant digital interruptions. Understanding how to manage these notifications puts you in control of when and how you're alerted to messages.

The good news is that most modern smartphones offer multiple ways to control voicemail notifications. You don't have to completely disable voicemail service itself—you're only adjusting how your phone alerts you about new messages. This means you can still receive messages and access them when you want, but without the disruptive notifications.

Practical Takeaway: Before making changes to your notification settings, think about whether you want to disable all voicemail notifications or simply reduce their frequency and intensity. This will help you choose the right adjustment method for your phone.

How to Remove Voicemail Notifications on iPhone

Apple iPhones handle voicemail notifications through the Phone app and the iOS notification settings. If you want to remove voicemail notifications from your iPhone, you have several options depending on how much control you want to maintain over your messages.

The most direct method is to access your phone's notification settings. Start by opening the Settings app on your home screen. Look for an option labeled "Notifications" and tap it. Scroll down until you see "Phone" in the list of apps. Tap on Phone to open its notification settings. You'll see several options here, including "Allow Notifications." If you toggle this switch off, you will no longer receive any notifications from the Phone app, including voicemail alerts.

However, if you want to keep some notifications from the Phone app but only remove voicemail notifications specifically, you have more detailed options. In the Phone notification settings, look for options like "Badge App Icon" or "Sounds and Haptics." You can disable individual notification types while keeping others active. For example, you might turn off sound and vibration alerts for voicemail while keeping the visual badge on the Phone app icon.

Another approach involves adjusting your voicemail notification settings directly through the Phone app. Open the Phone app and tap the Voicemail tab at the bottom of the screen. Some iPhone models allow you to adjust notification preferences from this screen. Additionally, you can set up "Do Not Disturb" or "Focus" modes on your iPhone that automatically silence notifications during specific times or when you're doing certain activities like working or sleeping.

If you're receiving voicemail notifications from your cellular carrier (such as AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile) rather than directly from your iPhone, you may need to contact your carrier to adjust these settings. Each carrier has different notification systems and control options.

Practical Takeaway: Start by opening Settings > Notifications > Phone and experimenting with different toggle switches to find the notification level that works for you. You may not need to disable notifications completely—sometimes just removing the sound alert is enough.

How to Remove Voicemail Notifications on Android Devices

Android phones offer similar notification controls as iPhones, though the exact location of these settings varies depending on whether you're using a Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, or another Android manufacturer's device. The general process is similar across most Android phones, but you may need to look in slightly different places depending on your specific model.

On most Android devices, begin by opening your Settings app. Look for an option that says "Apps," "App Management," "Applications," or "Notifications"—different manufacturers use different names. Once you're in the apps section, search for your phone's default calling or messaging app. This might be called "Phone," "Dialer," "Messages," "Messaging," or something similar depending on your phone brand. Tap on the app name to open its detailed settings.

Within the app settings, look for "Notifications" or "Notification Settings." This is where you control how this app sends you alerts. You'll typically see options to toggle notifications on or off completely. Some Android phones also let you choose specific notification types to disable—for example, you might turn off sound and vibration while keeping visual notifications, or vice versa.

For Samsung devices specifically, you can go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced Settings > Apps. Find your phone or messaging app and adjust its notification permissions from there. Google Pixel phones use a similar system but the menu path might be Settings > Apps & Notifications > Notifications.

Some Android users find that their voicemail notifications are coming from their wireless carrier's app rather than the built-in phone app. If this is the case, you'll need to find the carrier's app (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) in your app list and adjust its notification settings instead. You can also contact your carrier directly to ask about disabling carrier-level notifications.

Practical Takeaway: Open your phone's Settings app and search for "notifications" to find the quickest path to notification controls on your Android device. Take a screenshot of the menu path you use so you can find it again later if needed.

Managing Notifications Without Disabling Them Completely

Many people don't want to eliminate voicemail notifications entirely—they just want to reduce how intrusive those notifications are. Your phone offers several middle-ground options that let you stay informed about voicemails without constant interruptions.

One popular approach is to disable sound and vibration alerts while keeping visual notifications. This means you'll still see a badge on your phone app icon showing that you have unread voicemails, but your phone won't make noise or vibrate when a message arrives. This works well if you check your phone regularly anyway and don't need an audio alert.

Another option is to use "Focus" modes (on iPhone) or "Do Not Disturb" settings (available on both iPhone and Android). These features let you create custom profiles for different situations. For example, you might set up a Work focus that silences all notifications except calls from your boss, or a Sleep focus that disables all notifications after 10 p.m. You can include or exclude voicemail notifications from these profiles as you prefer.

You can also adjust the notification schedule, which is helpful if voicemail alerts are only bothering you at specific times. Some phones let you set "quiet hours" during which notifications are silenced or less intrusive. For instance, you could have notifications fully enabled during business hours but silenced during evenings and weekends.

If you're dealing with spam voicemails specifically, another strategy is to report spammers and use call-blocking features. Many phones have built-in tools to block numbers that have left spam messages. By reducing the actual number of voicemails you receive, you'll naturally get fewer notifications. Your carrier may also offer spam-filtering services that reduce the number of unwanted calls and voicemails before they reach you.

Practical Takeaway: Test different notification settings by adjusting one thing at a time—first remove sound, then try disabling vibration, then adjust timing. This approach helps you find the exact balance that works for your lifestyle.

Troubleshooting When Voicemail Notifications Won't Turn Off
