Free Guide to Using TSA PreCheck at Airport

What TSA PreCheck Is and How It Works

TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program run by the Transportation Security Administration that allows certain air travelers to move through airport security screening more quickly. Instead of following the standard security process, PreCheck members use dedicated screening lanes at participating airports. The program focuses on travelers who have already been vetted through a background check process, meaning security officers can spend less time on individual screening steps.

When you use TSA PreCheck at an airport, several things happen differently compared to standard screening. You keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on during the X-ray screening. You can leave your laptop, liquids bag, and other items in your carry-on luggage instead of removing them. You also walk through a standard metal detector rather than an advanced imaging technology machine in most cases. These changes combine to save most travelers 10 to 15 minutes at security, though the actual time savings depend on how busy the airport is that day.

The program currently operates at more than 200 U.S. airports and serves over 12 million members. Major airports like Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and New York all have dedicated PreCheck lanes. Smaller regional airports may also participate, though the availability varies. The TSA regularly adds new airports to the program as participation expands.

PreCheck membership costs $78 to $85 and lasts five years. The fee covers a background investigation that includes fingerprinting and checks of criminal records, immigration status, and terrorism watch lists. Renewal typically costs the same amount and requires a new background check. Some credit cards and frequent flyer programs offer statement credits that cover this cost, which means members might not pay anything out of pocket.

Practical Takeaway: TSA PreCheck works by reducing the screening steps you go through at airport security. Understanding what changes (shoes stay on, liquids stay packed) helps you move through the process smoothly and takes advantage of the faster lanes.

Who Can Use TSA PreCheck and What the Background Check Involves

TSA PreCheck is open to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. People who hold valid passports or passport cards from participating countries may also use the program at certain airports. The main requirement is that you must pass a background investigation conducted by the TSA. This investigation looks at your criminal history, immigration status, and whether you appear on any terrorism or security watch lists maintained by federal agencies.

The background check process is thorough but straightforward. The TSA collects fingerprints through a live scan process at an enrollment center, which are then checked against FBI databases. The agency also reviews your criminal history across all states, checks your immigration records, and cross-references information with the Department of Defense, State Department, and other federal databases. The entire process typically takes about 2 to 4 weeks, though it can take longer if additional investigation is needed.

Certain criminal convictions can result in denial. These include felonies involving crime of violence, drug trafficking, property crimes, and crimes against people. The TSA also considers misdemeanor convictions, traffic violations, and other conduct when making decisions. Recent immigration violations or being subject to a final removal order would also prevent approval. The TSA publishes a full list of disqualifying factors on its website, allowing people to review the standards before beginning the process.

Interestingly, people with minor criminal records sometimes still receive PreCheck approval. The TSA considers each application individually and may approve someone with a past misdemeanor or traffic violation, depending on how long ago it occurred and other circumstances. There is no automatic denial for all types of past conduct. People who are unsure whether their history will affect their application can contact the TSA directly or speak with an enrollment center staff member before paying the fee.

Practical Takeaway: Review the TSA's disqualifying factors list before enrolling. While many people with clean backgrounds are approved quickly, understanding what might cause denial helps you know what to expect and whether the program is right for your situation.

Finding and Visiting an Enrollment Center

The enrollment process requires an in-person visit to an official TSA PreCheck enrollment center. These centers are located throughout the United States at airports, government offices, and private enrollment facilities. The TSA website includes a complete directory where you can search by zip code or city to find the nearest center. Most urban areas have multiple options, while rural areas may require traveling to a regional hub.

Many enrollment centers are located at major airports in the airport's security area or near the ticketing level. Some travelers choose to visit an enrollment center before they have a flight scheduled, scheduling their visit during off-peak hours when centers are less crowded. Other people schedule their enrollment visit when they already plan to travel. A few enrollment centers operate at state driver's license offices, police departments, and private security companies, giving people options beyond airports.

The enrollment visit typically lasts about 10 to 15 minutes. You bring your passport or Real ID-compliant driver's license and proof of citizenship or permanent residency. The staff member verifies your identity, collects your fingerprints through a live scan process, takes a photograph, and answers basic questions about your background. You'll be asked about criminal history, immigration status, and whether you've ever been denied trusted traveler status. Providing accurate information is essential—false statements on your application can result in denial or revocation of membership.

After your enrollment visit, you receive a temporary document that you can use to get through PreCheck lanes while the TSA completes its background investigation. Once approved, you receive a known traveler number (KTN), which is a nine-digit code that you use when booking flights. Some people receive approval within a few days, while others wait 2 to 4 weeks. If you're denied, the TSA sends a notice explaining the reason, and you may have an opportunity to appeal the decision through an administrative process.

Practical Takeaway: Use the TSA's location finder tool to locate an enrollment center near you, bring valid identification and proof of citizenship, and plan for a 15-minute visit. Having your known traveler number ready before your flights lets you immediately use the PreCheck lanes.

Using Your Known Traveler Number When Booking Flights

Once you receive your PreCheck approval, you get a known traveler number (KTN) that looks like a nine-digit code. This number is how you tell airlines that you're a PreCheck member, and it's how the TSA identifies you as eligible for expedited screening. Using your KTN correctly is essential to ensuring that you can actually access the PreCheck lanes when you arrive at the airport.

When you book a flight online, during the checkout process you'll see a field asking for your "known traveler number," "trusted traveler program number," or sometimes "redress number." Enter your nine-digit PreCheck number in this field. The exact location of this field varies slightly depending on which airline's website you're using, but it's typically in a section labeled "traveler information" or "security information." If you're booking through a travel website like Expedia or Kayak, you'll enter the number when providing passenger details. If you're booking by phone with an airline representative, simply tell the agent your PreCheck number and they'll add it to your reservation.

Adding your KTN to your reservation doesn't cost anything and doesn't change your ticket price or type of reservation. It simply links your PreCheck status to your flight. You need to enter your KTN separately for each flight you book—the number doesn't automatically carry over between reservations. If you're traveling with family members who also have PreCheck, each person needs their own KTN entered on their individual reservation.

When you check in for your flight, verify that your boarding pass shows "TSA Pre✓" printed on it. This indicates that the airline properly linked your PreCheck status to your reservation and that the TSA's system recognizes you as eligible. If your boarding pass doesn't show the PreCheck indicator, inform the airline agent at check-in or at the gate. Sometimes technical glitches prevent the indicator from printing even when your KTN was entered correctly. The agent can help troubleshoot or reprint your boarding pass. Some airlines also allow you to add your KTN after booking through your online account or frequent flyer profile, which can be convenient if you forgot to enter it during the initial booking process.

Practical Takeaway: Always enter your nine-digit known traveler number when booking flights, and verify that "TSA Pre✓" appears on your boarding pass. This simple step is what enables you to use the
